BEGINNER MUSIC PRODUCERS: 12 TIPS FOR SUCCESS
The truth is, mastering your music industry niche is not something you learn to do overnight. If you have the right tips, you will be able to figure out how to make your mark. On that note, here is the first half of a two-part article about tips to help you succeed as a beginner in the industry.
1. FOCUS ON SIGNAL
There is too many people in the business of music production who settle for sub-par takes. This method is harmful to both you and your music. The best route to take on this problem is to listen to your music carefully. If you feel like the song is ready to go out, do yourself a favor and don’t put it out yet.
2. Follow the Leader
Many new music producers avoid this step. The problem is it becomes a crucial mistake. Always try to look at people who have made it in their business and follow their lead. That it not to say that you should ditch your creativity, just grow by looking at the people who have succeeded.
3. YOU MAKE THE MUSIC, NOT YOUR GEAR
This one goes out to the people who think buying the best gear will get them a quality sound. If you do not work hard and perfect your craft, the best gear will not be able to save you. Focus more on yourself and how you can get better. Save the top of the line gear for when you have a real idea how to make awesome music.
4. SAVE OFTEN!
While technology has made producing music an explosively creative process, it does have downsides. One of the worst downsides of technology is your work can end up lost. If you don’t save your work often, the result could be losing work that you spent hours on. The moral of the story is: save your work as often as possible.
5. Listen with Your Ears, Not Your Eyes
Many new music producers have an issue when it comes to finding that perfect sound. The reason this happens is because they are so focused on the visual aspect of producing. Sometimes, you just have to close your eyes and let the music flow. Use your ears instead of your eyes and just listen.
6. BE CAREFUL WITH EFFECTS
This tip for new music producers goes out to the ones who load their songs with effects. The truth is you should try to limit effects as much as possible until post-production. It is a simple enough reason. Putting effects in your song is easy, taking them out, not so much.
