5 FILMMAKING MYTHS DEBUNKED: INDEPENDENT FILMS ARE NOT DEAD

There are thousands of independent films released every single year. Because of all of the movies unleashed with no real brands behind them, people often say that the Independent Film genre is dead. That statement is the furthest thing from the truth.

5 POPULAR INDEPENDENT FILM MYTHS THAT NEED DEBUNKING

Due to this ideology, there are a ton of myths that people throw around to prove that independent films are dead. Here are five of those independent film myths debunked:

1. MYTH: NO MORE DISTRIBUTION EXISTS FOR INDEPENDENT FILMS

This myth pretty much says that there are no more deals for independent film directors. That is very far from the truth. If you are a good film director, and have all of your film business information in order, there is no reason you cannot get a good deal.

Here are some things you should have before you try to get a deal for your independent movie project:

  • An Engaging Story
  • Copyright Information
  • Proper Budget

2. MYTH: YOU NEED TO BE A SOCIAL MEDIA WIZ

This misconception goes hand-in-hand with how you promote your movie. Many people seem to believe that you need a strong social media presence in order for your independent films to make it to the top. This is not the case.

Having a strong social media identity means you can more effectively put your movie information on the internet and make it go viral. However, social media marketing will not make or break your independent movie.

3. MYTH: NO BUDGET = HIGH PROFITS

Paranormal Activity is one of many independent films that became a box office hit even with an extremely low budget. Yet, one of the factors people tend to forget about is how much money it actually cost the filmmakers behind the movie to promote it. Trust me, they had a full marketing plan that cost them more than the movie was even worth on paper.

4. MYTH: NOT EVERYONE CAN MAKE A CULT FILM

This myth is also something you will hear quite frequently. The truth is, anyone can make independent films that become cult classics. All it takes is the right amount of:

  • Time
  • Effort
  • Patience

Just because someone says you do not fit the criteria to make a successful cult film, does not make creating one impossible.

5.  MYTH: YOU SHOULD THINK LESS AND ACT MORE

This myth suggests that people no longer need to follow traditional film values. It leads beginner filmmakers to believe that independent films are always made on a whim. Some people do in fact think outside the box. But most successful filmmakers do hold true to the core movie making values to hit their success.
