Many times, certain areas of work will be represented by labor unions that help protect the best interests of the workers in that particular field. The I.A.T.S.E., or International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees, recently visited F.I.R.S.T. Institute to explain to students how the union can benefit them in their professional lives! I.A.T.S.E. TALKS ABOUT THE BENEFITS OF JOINING A LABOR UNION
The President of I.A.T.S.E. Local chapter 477, Chris Ranung, came by F.I.R.S.T. Institute to talk to our students about the benefits of joining the union. Chris told the story of how I.A.T.S.E. began in 1893. Since then, the union has evolved to embrace the development of new entertainment mediums, craft expansion, technological innovation and geographic growth.
He explained how I.A.T.S.E. fights for their members to be treated fairly and makes sure that members are not working in hazardous conditions. After the presentation, Chris stayed an additional hour answering questions from students and told them about some of his personal experiences coming up in the film industry.
I.A.T.S.E. is a labor union representing over 122,000 technicians, artisans, and craftspersons in the entertainment industry (including live theater, motion picture, television production and trade shows). I.A.T.S.E.’s full name is International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees, Moving Picture Technicians, Artists and Allied Crafts of the United States, Its Territories and Canada. The membership process of the I.A.T.S.E. varies widely depending on each local, but I.A.T.S.E. members enjoy benefits from Union Plus, a program created by the AFL-CIO to provide savings and discounts to union members.
