Trying to make a smash impact in the indie filmmaker industry? Well, pushing the limits just may be the key to setting yourself apart from other indie filmmakers in your circle. In order to make a film that rocks, you need to make sure the story line is unique. You also need to make sure that your filmmaking techniques captures the attention of your audience. So, how do you push the limits as an indie filmmaker, and still meet this criteria?
3 WAYS TO PUSH THE LIMITS TO MAKE A SMASH HIT FILM
Here are three Film Career tips to help you make a box office hit by simply pushing the limits:
1. EMBRACE THE FILMMAKING LIMITS YOU FACE
There are some basic limitations set by industry gurus, so-called experts, and the forces of nature. Sometimes, these limitations also limit your ability to create a smash hit film that your audience will love. But if you push those limits, you can get past such restrictions.
How in the world are you supposed to make a hit film with such a crappy camera? And, if you’re working on your own film, how do you get your silly friends to serious-up long enough to complete this take?
Well to begin with, you need a more positive attitude. As Robert Bresson, the great French filmmaker, once said:
“Someone who can work with the minimum can work with the most. One who can with the most cannot, inevitably, with the minimum.”
What does this mean? Basically, you have to celebrate those limits… Make it a self-challenge to make a box office hit with that crappy camera and your silly friends. Use your creativity to solve any issues as you push the limits put in front of you.
2. PUSH YOURSELF TO PUSH THE LIMITS
As an indie filmmaker, make it a point to learn something new each and every time you create a new film. That doesn’t mean doing something you don’t know how to do. Instead, do what you do best, while learning about new techniques.
Learn how to draw upon the skills of others, as well as skills within you that have been hidden all this time. Draw upon the techniques and skills you’ve already mastered and simply build them.
Keep pushing yourself to move forward, and further away from the novice you. Stop playing it safe, and learn to push the limits. In time, these new skills will help you achieve new feats as an indie filmmaker.
3. NEVER GIVE UP ON YOUR FILMMAKING GOALS
As an indie filmmaker, your goal is not to just make a film. You want to make a great film… a smash box office hit. Stay focused on that goal at all times during the filmmaking process.
If you haven’t already failed in your film making career, more than likely, you haven’t been pushing the limits far enough. But, if you have failed at some point, then you’re actually on your way to becoming an amazing filmmaker
Always remember that failure is simply a learning experience. As you continue to push the limits, you may bump your head a few times until you reach your peak. Until then, never give up. Keep pushing the limits and learn from your film making failures. And keep the famous words of Irish theater director, Samuel Barclay Beckett, “Fail Better” in mind next time.
