HOW TO DJ: GATHERING UP THE RIGHT DJ EQUIPMENT

Do you have a passion for music? Then, you might consider going into the career of being a DJ (disc jockey). It’s an exciting career that gives you the chance to meet some great people. You will have a fun work environment. Plus, you get to enjoy plenty of the best party scenes in your town, and potentially around the world.

THE IMPORTANCE OF HAVING THE RIGHT DJ EQUIPMENT

Before you can learn to be a DJ, you have to ask yourself what kind of DJ equipment you need for your line of work. It honestly all depends on your style of music you are going to be mixing. For example, if you like to mix electronic music, you will need a different setup than someone who prefers to mix Hip Hop.

So, now that you have figured out what you are going to do, it’s time to think about DJ equipment. If this is your first go at this, don’t go all out right away. Instead, start with a basic set of equipment that you can practice the basics on when learning to DJ.

Knowing the basics about DJ equipment can help you make smart choices, such as picking quality gear. You want something that you can use for years to come. Consider what you are going to be mixing at house parties, as opposed to at clubs and big events. Make sure all of the DJ equipment compliments each other. If it doesn’t, the sound quality will suffer.

LEARN THE BASICS OF HOW TO DJ

Having DJ equipment doesn’t make you a good DJ. It takes good training and technical skills for that these days. So, how do you learn how to DJ? Here are three tips:

  1. Start reading books on how to DJ. Professionals have been writing books about how to properly DJ since it has been around. This will be a great resource for you down the road when you want to do your first gig.
  2. Talking with another DJ is a great way to learn some tips and tricks for your new career choice. Try to catch a DJ at your local club while he/she is setting up. If you make sure she/he is not busy, the DJ might share some valuable information with you. This info could influence how you want to DJ, and what DJ equipment you should get.
  3. Enroll in school. Music production schools and audio engineering schools teach skills you can use as a DJ. This is one of those music industry jobs that aren’t performed in the music studio. But, it’s just as exciting and rewarding.

F.I.R.S.T. Institute’s Audio Engineering and Music Production will teach you the fundamentals you need to get started as a DJ.
