Importing Files into Adobe Premiere Pro | Video Editing Tips & Tricks

Meet Trent Duncan, Film & Video Instructor with F.I.R.S.T. Institute in Orlando, FL. He wants to talk with you about importing files into Adobe Premiere on this segment of Tips & Tricks.

1st Step to Importing Media Files Using Adobe Premier

First off, it’s very important that you organize all of your media files before you start your Adobe Premier import. When it comes to editing, file management is a very crucial part.

Duncan shows us his media files. Each media folder is properly named. Within each of them, are subfolders created for audio clips and video clips. Every media file is properly organized within the correct subfolder.

This is super important, the F.I.R.S.T. Institute instructor says. And, we’ll discuss why later in the tutorial.

How To Get Adobe Premier For Students

5 Ways to Import Media Files Using Adobe Premier

There are several different ways to import footage into Adobe Premiere. Here are five:

  1. Drag & Drop Method – This is the simple way to get the job done. Open up the explorer or the finder where your footage is located. Grab an entire folder, and drop it where you want it to go. It will include any and all subfolders, as well. All of your media clips will remain organized.
  2. Click & Import Method – With this method, you simply click on the project window, and import the footage. Right click. Click on Import. Find your footage in the window. Then, import the files individually, or import a folder and its entire contents at once.
  3. File/Import Method – This is just like using simple everyday software, such as Word, Chrome, etc… Just click on File in the top left corner of the screen, and click Import. Click on the folder or file of your choice, then click Import again.
  4. Keyboard Shortcuts – If you’re a MAC user, use Command/I to import your media files. For Windows users, it’s Control/I. This brings up the finder or explorer. Find the clips you want. Select them, and click Import.
  5. Using Media Browser Window – Open Adobe Premiere’s Media Browser Window. Click on the hard drive where your footage is located, then find the folders and/or files you want to import. Highlight, then right click. Now, click Import, and you’re done.

What Method Does Trent Duncan Use?

Trent Duncan says he rarely uses the media browser window to import files into Adobe Premier. But, that’s simply because he doesn’t want any unnecessary windows open in his editing system. That’s just his personal preference.

Duncan’s favorite is the Drag & Drop method. But, to each his own. As long as it gets the job done for you.

Viewing Your Media Files in Adobe Premiere

Once your footage has been imported into Adobe Premiere, you can view your files in the List mode or the Icon mode. You may choose one over the other, depending on just how you’re editing your projects.

For example, if you’re viewing audio files, the Icon mode is unnecessary, since there are no images to see. The List mode makes it easier to view audio files. Either way, viewing your files is much simpler if you organized them correctly before you started your import.

File Management in Adobe Premiere

The F.I.R.S.T. Institute instructor says it’s very important that your media files are already organized before you begin importing them into Adobe Premier. And, here’s why:

There may be reasons why you need to change the file names or locations of some of your imported media. This will cause the media within your editing system to get disrupted. That will lead to the big red “missing file” screen we all dread seeing.

For example, let’s say you moved a file to a new location. Now, inside your editing system, there will be an error that says, “Missing media for these clips.” This means you’ll have to go and locate the media in order for the file to play.

Fixing Disrupted Media Files in Adobe Premier

Do this by clicking on Locate. Go to the folder which contains the original file. Highlight it and click OK. Now, it’s all synced back up.

If you want to avoid having to do this for multiple files, manage your media properly. Make sure it’s all organized before importing it into Adobe Premier.

These Tips & Tricks from F.I.R.S.T. Institute Instructor Trent Duncan will help your import go smoothly. Using these tools, you will be able to keep your media files organized when editing.

Ultimately, these Adobe Premier media file import methods are ubiquitous among other editing software systems as well. They just happen to use Adobe Premiere editing for media files at F.I.R.S.T. Institute.
