LIFE AFTER GRADUATION FROM A MUSIC PRODUCTION SCHOOL

Life after graduation from a music production school, can you imagine what it’s going to feel like?

Picture yourself in a program at a music production school — you’re working toward your goal of a music production career, you’ve completed all of your group and individual projects, and have even worked through an internship or two, and you’re looking forward to graduation day!

After graduation, you’re wondering what comes next. Will you go on to becoming a music producer? Will you find an audio engineering career? Will you focus on a particular specialty and master it? Or will you take in a little of everything and take on a more broad role? It’s totally up to you!

SO YOU’VE GOTTEN AN EDUCATION… NOW WHAT?

Great news! Graduates of music production schools are always in high demand — whether you’d like to find an audio engineering career, you’re interested in becoming a music producer, or anything in between, studios and venues around the world are in need of professionals to join their teams. Recording artists, major record labels, television and radio stations, movie studios, and even live venues are always on the lookout for talented and driven individuals who are ready to make great things happen.

Now that you’ve earned your diploma and graduated from a music production college, you’re ready to answer their calls. Every year, more and more candidates are joining the pool of potential applicants for the jobs you’re competing for, and having a diploma is already helping you open doors that would have remained closed to you without it.

Because you have a diploma, you are in a class above those who’re applying to the same job but have no education or experience. If you’ve gone through an internship, you already have some experience, and your diploma proves that you’ve received the education and training that you need in order to become a valuable part of the team.

THAT’S GREAT… BUT HOW MUCH MONEY WILL I MAKE IF I GET A DIPLOMA FROM A MUSIC PRODUCTION SCHOOL?

Some of the best and most valuable experiences and networking opportunities come from audio internships at studios both large and small. Many of these internships are going to be unpaid, or the pay will be very low. This is to be expected! By no means should an internship be looked to as a source of income, but you should definitely be aware of the long-term value and potential they hold for advancing your music production career.

Once you’ve gotten your foot in the door and established yourself as an experienced professional, the pay for a Music Producer / Recording Engineer / Mix Engineer varies, with some people making upwards of $100,000+ a year. The highest pay seems to be going to the top music producers and mix engineers at the moment, though anyone who shows true promise and dedication in their chosen job can easily begin rising through the ranks.

At the end of the day, it’s undeniable that many studios and private businesses are going to look at the resume of a music production graduate and favor their application over one submitted by a candidate without a diploma from a music production school. It’s entirely possible that someone could succeed in the recording arts industry without spending a minute inside of a classroom; the question is, why take the chance when you can approach the industry with a diploma?
