QUIT YOUR DAY JOB BECOME A FILMMAKER INSTEAD

Ready to quit your day job to become a professional filmmaker? Well, we don’t necessarily recommend such a drastic move too soon in the game, but there are things you can do to work your way towards becoming a full-time filmmaker someday soon.

4 TIPS TO HELP YOU BECOME A FILMMAKER FULL-TIME

Here are four tips to help you position yourself so that you can quit your job soon, and move towards becoming a full-time filmmaker:

1. NETWORK WITH OTHERS WITH THE SAME DREAM

There’s an entire network of aspiring filmmakers hoping to quit their jobs to do it full time someday. You can find them on the set, in social media groups, online forums, etc. Networking with these people will give you inside connections to on-the-set jobs, getting you the hands-on experience you need to further your career and become a filmmaker. Most of your new friends are open to sharing industry knowledge and insider info, as long as you’re willing to do the same in return.

2. KEEP THOSE MANUALS HANDY

Just like with any industry, you must know the tools of your trade in order to become a filmmaker. There are things you can learn by simply playing around with your filmmaking equipment. But when it comes time to using this stuff on the set, you need to know all of the ins and outs of your tools to use them efficiently. So if you have no idea which file cabinet (or trash can) you “filed” your equipment manual in, you better try to find it online. Just imagine the reputation you’ll build when you solve an issue on the set with that high-tech mic no one else can seem to figure out.

3. BUILD VALUE IN YOU, NOT JUST YOUR SKILLS

Sometimes, it may look as if there’s no place for you on the set. But this is usually far from the truth. Know how to make a cup of coffee? Is your smile infectious enough to stand next to the director with a film bag? True, these may not sound like glamorous jobs. However, they give you the chance to hob-knob on the film set, while building up your resume. Both are very effective ways to increase your film and video industry credibility as you work towards your choice to become a filmmaker.

4. GO TO FILM SCHOOL

Aspiring to make an award-winning film someday? The best film and video schools don’t just give you the book smarts you need to enter the film industry. They help you gain the hands-on experience you need to create great, high-quality film and video projects.
