Opinions vary on the subject of higher education in almost every industry. The Web and Graphic Design education debate is no exception — ask around, and you’re bound to receive reasons both for and against attending school for Web and Graphic Design. Today, we’re looking into the pros of attending Web and Graphic Design schools by discussing the programs they offer. This should be fun, so let’s get to it.
WEB AND GRAPHIC DESIGN SCHOOLS
Web and Graphic Design schools will obviously favor pursuing a Graphic Design education in a more formal school environment, but our interest in this debate goes beyond our own institution — we are always concerned with the needs and desires of our students past, present, and future. In order to give our students and graduates the best possible start in their careers, we’re all about providing what they need to succeed, and so far we’ve found that going to Web and Graphic Design school is the place to start in the design industry.
A school environment offers students an opportunity to build a solid foundation in design industry fundamentals that will serve them throughout their careers. In school, it’s more than just being taught how to use a program (though there are certainly classes that introduce the industry standard programs to students) or how to pair colors and fonts when creating a design. Good Graphic Design schools allow students to combine courses in design with courses in marketing, business, and other relevant areas of study that will help them put their best foot forward when they venture out into the job market.
THE IMPORTANCE OF INSTRUCTORS
The best Web and Graphic Design schools’ environments also give students access to the feedback of their peers and instructors, and countless opportunities to review the work of others. In essence, a school experience is often amplified by the interaction that students have with others who are also learning, or are already working in the design industry.
School also helps students forge connections that can last far beyond the walls of any college. Many designers report that they were able to network with fellow students, faculty, and industry professionals through their school’s events and Career Development services, and that these connections helped them to secure jobs as well as further their growth as designers.
A DEGREE OR CERTIFICATE SHOWS YOU ARE DEDICATED AND COMPETENT
A degree or other proof of a formal education is a door-opener, and there is nothing wrong with taking advantage of that! A great number of “entry level” design jobs with large companies and small businesses include a degree in design as a requirement for potential candidates. If you’re planning on flying solo or freelancing with a studio, this might not be as much of an incentive for you, but if you’re planning on entering the workforce in a more traditional sense, a degree can get things moving forward.
Depending on who you ask, Web and Graphic Design schools are either a critical component of your design career, or something that you can certainly do without. We are confident that it’s the former. Why not go for something that can help you build the necessary foundation that you need to succeed, and then provide you with networking and employment opportunities that can help launch your career?
