Faculty Spotlight: Trent Duncan – Graduation Speech
Where Did The Time Go?
Trent Duncan, an instructor at F.I.R.S.T. Institute, gives an empowering speech during a graduation ceremony. Duncan says, “Where did the time go?” Well, where did it go? Duncan mentions that as an incoming student, you are excited for lies ahead, but a year seems like a lot of work and a lot of time to dedicate to school.
Jump In With Both Feet
Once you’re in class with all of your peers and you see the instructor begin your first lesson, what lies ahead might seem like a lot. But… Duncan mentions that you dive into projects, experiment with equipment, network with students, hone your skills, and suddenly the time will pass. Before you know it, you’re sitting in your seat in a cap and gown ready to take on the world. Anything else that lies ahead will seem scary and intimidating, but jump in with both feet and work hard for what you want. Before you know it, that too will not seem so bad.
Use Your Time Wisely
Trent Duncan gives advice to graduates to think about the 16 hours a week that were spent in classes. Moving forward, Duncan recommends to use that time wisely so that a year, five years, or ten years down the road you are proud of what you did with your time. Do everything that you can and everything that you wanted to do, so you get to where you want to be in life.
Say “Yes” To The Right Things
Duncan offers one last critical piece of advice: Every time you say yes to one thing, you are saying no to so many other things. So make sure that the one thing you say yes to is something you really want to do.
