In this edition of Film Faculty Spotlight, you’ll learn what sets F.I.R.S.T. Institute Orlando Film School apart with our own Omar Torres, instructor in the Digital Filmmaking and Video Production program. Thanks to his extensive experience producing commercials (catch a peek at one of his award-winning projects in this video!), Torres offers students great film career tips and insights into the business and art of filmmaking. His goal as a teacher at F.I.R.S.T. Institute is to make sure that all his students are confident and prepared for their first day on-set after graduating video production colleges!

Torres has written, directed, and filmed content for commercials, websites, promotional spots, and more. One of his favorite gigs so far throughout his various careers in film has been with David Maus Volkswagon and Toyota, where he was able to actively contribute to marketing strategy as he directed commercials. The creative freedom of working freelance on diverse projects has given Torres invaluable experience in producing creative content independently. In addition to being an expert in the practical concerns of making films, from camera set-up to the editing process, he has established his own approaches to visual marketing and writing for the advertising industry.

Torres values the unique experience of teaching at F.I.R.S.T. Institute’s film school because he believes that film students ought to be able to get the attention they need, ask questions, and interact one-on-one with instructors. Unlike many video production colleges, the small class sizes at F.I.R.S.T. Institute mean Torres is able to make sure that every student has the right tools and information to complete the real-world projects that are central to the coursework. These projects prepare students by pairing them with actual clients through the filming process so that they have first-hand knowledge of the kinds of scenarios and situations they will encounter when they’ve graduated from film school. Instructors like Torres are able to offer real-world Film Career Tips to students. This way, says Torres, he can assure that his students are prepared and confident to take the first step out of film production school and into the film industry.

His advice on getting started? “Be positive and push forward!”
