Through the art of storytelling, Co-founder and Producing Director of Odyssey Creative, Marc Collins recently paid a visit to Film and Video Production class 1126 at F.I.R.S.T Institute and shed some light on how to leave your creative footprint on the production stage.
LEARNING FROM A FILM INDUSTRY PROFESSIONAL
Collins, who started his company 13 years ago, spoke to F.I.R.S.T. Institute’s film school students about the aspects of leadership and entrepreneurship in the video and creative media industries.
“In the beginning of any business you need to first start off with your goals. Then you need to break it down into strategies to achieve these goals and produce tactics to complete those strategies,” said the Addy Award-winning writer and director who is no stranger to the struggles and successes of free enterprise.
Collins advised film school students to seek mentorship advice against the seemingly insurmountable obstacles to small business ownership — legal, financial and the many other factors involved in owning your own business. The only way to get better at your craft is to surround yourself with better people. The former Orlando Shakespeare theater board member also spoke on the ‘tiers of ability’ when building your team.
“It goes like this: first is professional ability, second is affordability, third is availability and last is affability,” Collins said.
Without a shadow of a doubt, Collins left F.I.R.S.T. Institute students with plenty of knowledge, insight and fuel to add to their burning desire of a film and video production career.
In the same light, Actor Denzel Washington recently spoke to group of upcoming actors and actresses on the art, passion and desire of those who take the stage and dare to be great. He left them with these profound words: “Dreams without goals remain dreams and ultimately fuel disappointment… Protect your gift, use it and share it. We are all in this fraternity together.”
