Janice Acevedo (MCZ Dub Productions): Student Story | Recording Arts

“Immediately, I was like, ‘This is the school I want to go to.’”

Dubble Trouble

Janice Acevedo has only been a student at F.I.R.S.T. Institute for two months, but there’s no doubt she’s in the right place. Before enrolling at F.I.R.S.T. to kickstart her career, she was already making a splash online by making “dubs” (or fan-made cartoons and animations) on YouTube.

“I started my YouTube channel in 2012,” she recalls. “I started making dubs for shows I was a fan of. RWBY, Miraculous Lady Bug, My Hero Academia…”

A dub, she explains, is similar to a technique in the film industry called ADR, or automated dialogue replacement. She explains her process in creating a dub: “I start by finding an online comic I like and ask the artist for their permission. I send the scripts to my voice actors. I add music and sound effects (as well as animation).” After uploading her dubs to YouTube, she sends them back to the original artist, who are often thrilled with her creation.

A Resounding Success

Janice’s YouTube channel is called “MCZ Dub Productions”. Over the years, her videos have amassed millions of views, as well as over 300,000 subscribers.

“After I started making Miraculous Ladybug videos, my subscriber count skyrocketed. I was like, where are you people coming from?” she jokes.

A Promising Career Path

Janice knew she wanted to capitalize on her success and follow her passion. She dreamt of one day working for a company like Funimation or Rooster Teeth as an ADR director. She started looking for schools that specialized in ADR and audio production, and F.I.R.S.T. was the first one she came across.

“Immediately, I was like, ‘This is the school I want to go to.’ I was constantly calling, asking questions, writing notes,” she says. Seeing the studios and equipment in use for live sound and audio production fascinated her.

Now that she’s in the program, Janice says she’s having a lot of fun. She’s invested in learning about the audio industry and all that is has to offer. And at the end of the day, it’s hard to leave!

“Each day goes by in a flash. It’s like, can it not end? Can I stay here?”
