Our first graduating class of 2020 are now making their way into the industry! The title of Valedictorian went to Robert Cannon, a student of our Recording Arts & Show Production program. Watch below to hear Robert’s story and how F.I.R.S.T. helped him get the education he had always wanted.
First Foray into Music
Robert started writing music in highschool, recording raps in a sound-dampened closet. He found inspiration in his brother, who also wrote and recorded raps, and even gifted Robert his first recorder and mixer. Robert credits his brother with setting him in the right direction for his burgeoning career in the music industry.
Robert’s Time at F.I.R.S.T.
Robert says F.I.R.S.T. Institute was the “perfect fit” for him. Robert has a full-time job and a family – but the flexible scheduling offered by F.I.R.S.T. allowed him to pursue the education that he had wanted for years.
He thought that his years of experience would allow him to have a head start in the program. “Turns out, I didn’t know half of what I thought I knew,” he jokes.
When he arrived, Robert specifically wanted to pursue music, but was opened up to the other possibilities in the recording industry, such as podcast recording, sound for film, and creating jingles for commercials.
Using the Education
“They’ve equipped me with the skills, the knowledge… they’ve opened my eyes to the possibilities in this industry…”
Robert has plans to build his own studio and start his own record label, but is open to other jobs in the industry as well. He feels that because of F.I.R.S.T., he has a solid foundation to build his career on, no matter what he decides to do in the future.
